CAPT.KAZI ALI IMAM

Capt. Kazi Ali Imam had joined Merchant Navy in the year 1967 as Deck Cadet . Before joining Sea he was studying in Dhaka University undergoing B.Sc. degree course in Science faculty.

Capt. Imam after completing 2 years sea time was promoted to the rank of 3rd. Officer and soon after he was given the charge as 2nd.Officer. After he completed his sea time he was stranded in Pakistan during ‘Bangladesh liberation war’. He was the first Bangladeshi mariner joined Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Nautical College in Mumbai and qualified in Class 3(Deck) COC examination from Mumbai.

Due to paucity of Certified Marine Officer Capt. Imam had to join Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) as 2nd.Officer in the year 1972. After serving for about 4 years in the rank he went to UK and studied in Llandaff Technical College, Cardiff, UK for six months and thereafter he passed his Class -2 (Deck Officer) examination in the year 1976. After obtaining Class -2 COC he served in Kuwait and German shipping company and later rejoined BSC as Chief Officer and served in both Passenger and Cargo ship. He went to UK and got admitted in Plymouth Technical college and undergone six months preparatory course and passed Class -1 (Deck) Master Mariner examination from Southampton in 1980. Consequently he returned to his country and joined BSC ship as Master and commanded various ocean going vessels for about 4 years with success. During his service in Afloat and shore establishment he went to supervise and take command of newly built ship in Singapore, France and Japan. On his successful performance on ships, Capt Imam was transferred to Shore establishment and posted as Deputy Marine Superintendent in 1982 looking after ship repair, maintenance and personal management of large section of fleet . He was later promoted to the post of General Manager (GM) in 1986 and served for about 13 years in the post in both Technical and Commercial Department.

During his service in BSC, he was awarded IMO Fellowship for studying in ‘World Maritime University ,Malmo in Sweden where he studied for 2 years and obtained his MSc degree in MSA. During his course in Sweden he went to UK, Finland and Denmark and worked with their ‘Government Safety Administration’ for six months were involved in carrying out survey and Port State Control on ships calling in their port.

He became a Member of Nautical Institute, UK in the year 1986 and established the first branch of ‘Nautical Institute’ in Bangladesh and became the ‘Founder Chairman’ and holds the post for two consecutive terms. He received a ‘appreciation letter’ and was awarded FNI status by NI (UK) for the service rendered to NI activities in Bangladesh.

Capt. Imam was sent on lien to serve as Principal of ‘Maritime Training Centre’ in 1999 and served there for about six years and also worked as Project Director and completed a government project in time with great success. On completion of the project he was given additional charge and posted as Commandant, Marine Academy, located in Chittagong and served for about two years on contract. On return to NMI he resigned from the service and joined as ‘Executive Vice President’ in NMCI (Bangladesh) Ltd, a subsidiary company of NMCI Group, USA involved in Ship survey and Pre-Shipment Inspection.

He left NMCI and joined as Chief of Nautical Studies in BMTI‘ in 2008, the largest private marine institute in the country where he is also working as Project director of ‘ International Maritime Academy’.

During his service professional service he attended many International Seminars and courses at home and abroad. He has been promoted to the rank of Principal of International Maritime Academy from 01 January 2012.
