A K M IQBAL BAHAR, INSTRUCTOR

A.K.M IQBAL BAHAR

A K M Iqbal Bahar has been serving as an English Instructor at International Maritime Academy (IMA) since June, 2014. Here his main responsibility is to impart knowledge on English language and communication skills to pre-sea cadets and rating trainees. In doing so, he uses a range of course books and materials, plus a variety of audio-visual aids. His emphasis is on dialogue and role-playing, but more formal exercises, language games and literature are also used. The ultimate aim of his lessons is to encourage the learners to communicate with each other using the structures and vocabulary they have learnt and to improve their four basic language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing. After the completion of verbal communication skills training, he familiarizes Maritime English to the prospective marine cadets and ratings for better communication on board ships. Overall, he follows a systematic plan of learning activities and lectures aligned with the model course curriculum of International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Prior to joining International Maritime Academy, Iqbal had also worked at Cambridge Maritime College. He was selected and trained as a Resource Teacher for SEQAEP, a project of Bangladesh Government. Besides he attended several conferences and workshops on language teaching. He obtained M.A. in English Language Teaching (ELT) from Institute of Modern Languages, University of Dhaka. There he completed his dissertation on ‘Gender-based Identity Representation in English Textbook’. He is particularly interested in syllabus design, materials development, teaching methodologies and so on. His career objective is to contribute in enhancing the quality of English language education in Bangladesh.
