Visit To Bangabandhu Maritime University By Commandant Of IMA
The Commandant of International Maritime Academy and the Principal of Bangladesh of Bangladesh Maritime Training Institute visited the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of the Maritime University, Rear Admiral Ashraful Hoq Chowdhury, NBP, OSP, BCGM, ndu, afwc, psc as a courtesy call on 23rd October, 2024. The Commandant and Principal was warmly received by the Vice Chancellor. They exchanged on views and strategies to enhance the capability and quality of maritime education in Bangladesh and the way forward. Souvenirs were exchanged after the meeting. IMA & BMTI invited the Vice Chancellor of the University to visit their premises to assert the quality and facility provided.

26th September 2024 – Bangladesh Maritime Training Institute (BMTI) was recognized by the Director General of Shipping under the Ministry of Shipping for Excellence in Maritime Training and Education. The award was presented on the occasion of World Maritime Day 2024 by the Chief Guest, Brigadier General (R.) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hussain, Hon’ble Adviser, Ministry of Shipping. The award was received by Principal of Bangladesh Maritime Training Institute, Capt. M. Habibur Rahman Khan. Our appreciation goes out to all the Seafarers, Government Officials and Maritime Sector for giving BMTI such honor and recognition.

Unix Line Pte Ltd. recently hosted its 51st Crew Training & Education Seminar, spanning three days across prestigious venues. The first day took place at Radisson Blu Chattogram, followed by the second day at Haque & Sons Chattogram on March 5th and 6th, 2024. A remarkable turnout of over 127 seafarers participated in the comprehensive three-day training program. Distinguished foreign guests attended the seminar the Director of Unix Line, Senior Deputy General Manager, Technical, and Marine DGM and Marine Operational of MOLCT. The seminar delved into various crucial topics such as safety, navigation, crew injury prevention, and technical issues. The seminar aimed to enhance the skills and knowledge of seafarers, equipping them to address challenges at sea effectively. On the third day, participants enjoyed an outing to the renowned Foy's Lake BASECAMP. The outing included team-building exercises, as well as recreational activities. The event concluded with a grand dinner party, offering attendees a relaxed setting to network and exchange experiences. The success of the 51st Crew Training & Education Seminar underscores Unix Line's unwavering commitment to promoting professional development and safety in the maritime industry.

Ceremonial passing out of 12th batch pre-sea cadets held at IMA permanent campus. Chief guest was the Senior Secretary, Ministry of Shipping and guest of honour was Commodore Maksud Alam, Director General, Department of Shipping. Ceremonial march past was followed by oath taking, cap throwing and a cake cutting ceremony. The event was covered by local print and electronic media. 78 cadets were passed out and so far 765 cadets have graduated from the academy. This batch is the first batch to be affiliated with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University undergraduate programme.

Seventy pre-sea trainee ratings completed their training and the formal passing out ceremony was held on 17th November, 2023. All the ratings scored high scores in the Department of Shipping examination leading to the issue of NOC for CDC. All required ancillary courses for joining a ship was also conducted and completed on schedule. In view of the prevailing situation the ceremony was limited to the trainees and faculty members of IMA. The Commandant of the academy was the chief guest. Formal parade by the passing out ratings was the main event of the event. The Commandant, in his brief speech to the ratings lauded their performance of the trainees throughout their training period and expressed his gratitude to the instructors who had worked tirelessly for the trainees. Oath taking ceremony was conducted by the Adjutant of the academy. This was followed by distribution of awards to the ratings. Silver medals were distributed amongst the highest scoring cadets and in this batch. The award of the deck department went to Tawfiq Hasan who scored a brilliant 93,97 percent; the best engine and fitter ratings Uzzal Chandra Karmakar scored 93.97 percent, steward ratings Abdur Rahman scored 88.86 percent and electrical rating Shariful islam who scored 82.9 percent. For the best overall performance the gold medal for the 8th batch went to deck rating GM Zahidul Hasan Choton. Cap throwing and formal cake cutting to commemorate the event was held, followed by a formal feast for all the trainees, faculty members and staff of the academy. The academy wishes the newly inducted ratings in the merchant marine a very fruitful career ahead at sea.

UNIX LINE PTE LTD celebrated its milestone 50th crew training and education seminar at the International Maritime Academy (IMA) & Regency Hotel in Dhaka from October 10th to 11th, 2023. The event included a family dinner and a loyalty award ceremony at Hotel Dhaka Regency. MOL Chemical Tanker, the proud owner of Unix Line, upholds a steadfast commitment to safety across people, vessels, cargo, and the environment. Capt. Amit Jain, Managing Director of Unix Line, led the seminar alongside a distinguished team from the Marine & Technical department. The seminar emphasized Unix Line's dedication to crew, vessel, and cargo safety, providing a valuable platform for over 113 participants to enhance their knowledge. The inaugural day featured speeches by Mr. Emdadul Haque Chowdhury and Capt. Amit Jain, group exercises on various topics, and insightful discussions. The second day focused on lectures covering cybersecurity awareness, safety culture, operation, and compliance. Workshops and interactive sessions delved into specific department topics. The seminar concluded with valuable feedback, addressing queries, and recognizing 120 officers and ratings for their continuous service. The event ended on a high note with a cultural program and a delightful dinner.

The current Director General of Shipping, Commodore M Maksud Alam, (E), BSP, NUP, BCGM(S), ndc, psc, visited the academy and was impressed with the infrastructure and cadet’s training that is ongoing in the academy. The DG was given a march past by the cadets of the academy and addressed the trainees at the auditorium where crests were exchanged. He also visited BMTI.

The newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa, OSP, NPP, rcds, afwc, psc, PhD, paid an official visit to the academy as part of his visit to all affiliated training providers. He was given a guard of honour and a march past by the IMA cadets. The VC was briefed about the activities of the academy and he was physically shown the infrastructure and training facilities of the academy. Tree plantation to commemorate the visit was done. The VC addressed the cadets of the academy and expressed his satisfactory about the training provided by the academy. Souvenir crests were exchanged. Later the VC visited our sister concern, BMTI.

A Seminar on Marine Anti-Corruption Network was held in the academy, highlighting the corrupt practices that are in existence in the maritime sector, particularly in the viewpoint of seafarers. The main speaker of the event Mr. Mathias Bak of MACN, Copenhagen spoke on the event and the audience comprised mainly of IMA trainees. An interactive session with the trainees brought out some answers to the fraudulence practices carried out by unscrupulous manning agents. The guest speakers were the past Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, Rear Adm Khalid Iqbal (Retd.) and the ex-DG of the Department of Shipping Commodore Syed Ariful Islam (Retd.)

Over 115 seafarers attended the comprehensive 2-day training and education seminar. The event was graced by distinguished personalities such as the Executive Officer Marine & Marine Operational of MOLCT, the Managing Director of Unix Line, and the General Manager of Marine, Technical, and Marine SI. The seminar covered a wide range of topics, including safety, navigation, crew injury prevention, and various technical issues. The sessions were conducted by experienced professionals who provided valuable insights and practical knowledge to the attendees. The aim of the seminar was to enhance the skills and knowledge of the seafarers, ensuring that they are equipped to tackle any challenges that may arise at sea. On the third day of the seminar, the attendees were taken on an outing to the renowned Heritage resort. On February 25th, 2023, we had the honor of welcoming Mr. Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, MP, Hon'ble State Minister, Ministry of Shipping, Begum Meher Afroze Chumki, MP, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Women and Children Affairs Ministry and Khaleda Akhtar Joint Secretary (MPA & PPA) Ministry of Shipping at the International Maritime Academy (IMA). During their visit, they expressed their happiness and satisfaction with the facilities at IMA, describing it as a complete maritime training facility. They wished the academy all the success for its future endeavors. Upon their arrival, the state minister and Chairperson were greeted with a guard of honor by the IMA cadets from the 12th & 13th batch. They were then given a detailed briefing about the academy's activities and shown the various training facilities available at the academy. Passing Out Ceremony of IMA 7th Batch Ratings
The ceremonial passing out ceremony of the 7th batch of ratings was held at its permanent campus at Gazipur on 14th November, 2022. This batch consisted of fifty ratings; 25 for deck, 10 for engine, 5 cook ratings and 10 steward ratings. The Chief guest for the occasion was Commodore Md. Nizamul Haque, Director General, Department of Shipping. High officials of the Department, shipping dignitaries, the parents and guardians of the passing out batch and the faculty members were present. So far 308 rating cadets have passed out from this academy, including the present batch. Previous batch trainees had all been provided with employment in reputed foreign flagged vessels. Medals were presented for outstanding performance in each category as well as the best all round cadets by the Chief guest. This year the best performance award went to cook rating Mr. Md. Habibur Rahman who was awarded the academy gold medal for his outstanding performance. The programme was rounded up with the slow march past by the trainees, cap throwing ceremony and the traditional cake cutting ceremony.

On October 15th 2022, Mr. Md. Mostafa Kamal, Secretary, Ministry of Shipping visits International Maritime Academy and expresses his happiness and considers the academy as a complete maritime training facility. Earlier on his arrival, he was given a guard of honour by IMA cadets of the 12th batch, briefed about the academy activities and shown the various training facilities of the academy. International Maritime Academy is pleased to inform you that our marine training workshop has been approved by Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore for conducting training in welding, Marine Engineering (Machinery, Automation & Cargo systems). IMA has thereby complied international requirement for pre-sea and post-sea training requirement of our seafarers and is the first maritime training provider to obtain such a certification. Seafarers can now avail full workshop training for pre and post sea requirement at IMA. The academy also provides tailor made training facility for specific areas as per the requirement of shipowners.

International Maritime Academy (IMA) has been allowed to run the BSc (Hons) Course in Nautical Science and BSc in Marine Engineering course under Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University. IMA thus becomes the first maritime training provider in the private sector to be accorded the approval and this will apply to the fresh intake of this year onwards. Apart from a career at sea, the undergraduate program will allow IMA trained cadets to seek further education at home and abroad and thereby enhance the prospect and job opportunity for its trainee.

On 23rd February 2020, the passing out ceremony of the Fifth Batch pre-sea Ratings of International Maritime Academy was held at its own campus at Pubail, Gazipur. 50 Ratings have passed out this year from Deck, Engine, Fitter and Catering division who will be fully employed onboard Haque & Sons Ltd managed vessels. Commodore Sayed Ariful Islam (TAS), ndc, psc, BN, Director General, Department of Shipping was the chief guest. Beside him, many invited guests were present in the ceremony. Gold Medal for overall best performance was awarded to deck rating Md. Mainuddin Chisti for best performance. Deck rating Kamrul Hasan Emon received the silver medal for best performance in Deck division, Fitter rating Md. Forhad Uddin received the silver medal for best performance in Engine & Fitter division and Cook rating Md. Juwel Rana received the silver medal for best performance in Catering division. The event was also attended by dignitaries from Ministry of Shipping, Department of Shipping along with Managing Director and Commandant of IMA. The program called off with cake cutting and sumptuous lunch.

IMA Signs MoU with Canadian University

Educational Collaboration & Resource Sharing Between CUB & IMA
International Maritime Academy (IMA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Canadian University of Bangladesh (CUB) in education and training cooperation on 21st October 2019 at the University Campus. Cadets after successful completion of two years course from IMA and one-year sea service will have scope to pursue higher education (undergraduate)degree course in Shipping and Maritime Science in Canadian University of Bangladesh with credit transfer facilities of maximum 75 Credit Hours (CH). The students can then complete six semesters within a period of seven years and get their undergraduate degree from the university. The MoU also includes resource sharing with CUB in the use of the facilities of IMA for further advancement of maritime education. The Vice Chancellor of CUB, Dr. Mohammad. Mahfuzul Islam signed the MoU on behalf of the university and Capt. Zaki Ahad FNI signed on behalf of IMA. The Vice Chancellor of CUB, Managing Director of IMA, Mr. Emdadul Haque Chowdhury, Capt. Kazi Ali Imam, Head of the Marine faculty of CUB spoke on the occasion on the importance of resource sharing and closer collaboration between the university and the academy. The Commandant of IMA praised the initiative of CUB in rendering the opportunity to IMA cadets to further their formal academic career which is fully recognized. The students of IMA will get special preference in enhancing their career with the degree that will be conferred on completion of their studies in CUB; something that the parents of the cadets had always desired. IMA has fulfilled its obligation to provide opportunity for its trainees both at sea and ashore and treat the opportunity as a milestone in maritime education and training in Bangladesh.

Haque & Sons Ltd. takes over new delivery Vessel MV. Daisy Glory Panamax Bulk Carrier Dwt 80,000 at Nantong COSCO KHI Shipyard, China with twenty-one Bangladeshi crew compliments. The Delivery took place on 23rd July 2019 led by Capt. Md. Kallul Chowdhury and Chief Engineer Mohammed Abul Bashar. We thank owners/managers for their continuous faith and support to HSL seafarers and congratulate the seafarers onboard for the successful takeover of this vessel. Three IMA cadets are employed onboard.

On 22nd March 2019, the passing out ceremony of 8th batch cadets took place in IMA permanent campus. Honorable Member of parliament Begum Meher Afroze Chumki, Chairperson of the parliamentary standing committee on Women and Children affairs ministry was the chief guest. Honorable Secretary, Ministry of Shipping Mr. Md. Abdus Samad was the Special Guest. Honorable Director General, Department of Shipping, Commodore Syed Ariful Islam, (TAS), ndc, psc, BN was the Guest of Honor. A smart march past, wearing smart outfit were performed by the cadets. Several government officials, distinguished guests and proud parents of the 8th batch cadets enjoyed the programmed. Cadet Tasnim received the Gold medal for all round performance, Cadet Ibrahim & Mehedi were awarded with Silver medal for academic performance. Chief guest, special guest and guest of honor were presented with commemorative crest. The event was called off with Cake cutting and sumptuous lunch.

IMA 8th & 9th Batch Mess Night 2018
On 13th December 2018 IMA organized Annual Cultural Programme performed by 8th batch and 9th batch combined. Cultural activity is very important for an academy cadet to get a relief from it’s hectic schedule. It prepares the cadets for real world and add additional quality thus strengthening their personal skills.Cadets within their limited resources, turned the evening into colourful one. The complete academy was decorated. The Auditorium was decorated with paintings, placards, own made flowers, ships, oceans and what not.Programme started with national anthem. It was a programme with all genre of cultural arena such as music, dance, jokes and drama. They made the instructors also to take part in a game. Family members of instructors were also present in the programme and appreciated the event. The programme ended with the valuable speech from the commandant of the academy Capt Zaki Ahad. Finally, a sumptuous dinner was arranged for all. Management always encourages the cadets to arrange such activities which are in line with educational objectives and meets the requirement of healthy and peaceful mind.

On December 04, 2018 at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd 187,000 DWT new building Cape size Vessel MV FERRUM AUSTRALIS was manned by Bangladeshi seafarers from Haque & Sons Ltd. Twenty-one seafarers including officers, ratings and three International Maritime Academy cadets joined the vessel under the excellent leadership of Capt. Forkan Ahmed Nahid and Chief Engineer Md. Selim Miah. Special Thanks to Taga San of Santoku Senpaku for providing our seafarers the opportunity to man this beautiful vessel. Capt. G.M. Quadrey Executive Director and Emdadul H Chowdhury Managing Director of Haque & Sons Ltd attended the delivery ceremony along with official delegates from Santoku Senpaku, Rio Tinto among other dignitaries. Haque & Sons Ltd is proud to be part of the process in grooming, training and maintaining the pool of Santoku Senpaku crew since 2011. These vessels will be operated under Tinto Group is an Anglo-Australian multinational and one of the world's largest metals and mining corporations. New Take Over Vessel "M.V. Meishan Bridge"

On June 06, 2018 at Imabari Shipbuilding Shipyard 14,000-TUES new building container vessel MV Meishan Bridge was taken over by Bangladeshi seafarers from Haque & Sons Ltd. This is the first time in history of Bangladesh where Ultra Large Container series vessel of 14,000 was taken over by 23 seafarers including officers and ratings under the excellent leadership of Capt. Omar Kabir and Chief Engineer Md Ali Hassan from Bangladesh. Special Thanks to KLSM Singapore and K-LINE Japan for providing our seafarers the opportunity to man this beautiful vessel. Capt. Saydur Rahman Executive Director and Shichida San of HSL Tokyo attended the delivery ceremony along with official delegates from Kline Group.
Tokyo-based Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. ("K" Line) took delivery of the 14,000-TEU at Imabari Shipbuilding Company's Hiroshima Shipyard in Japan. "K" Line has a total of five ULCSs scheduled for delivery this year.
Haque & Sons is proud to be part of the process in grooming, training and maintaining the pool of KLSM crew since 1997. These vessels will be operated under Ocean Network Express Pte. Ltd. (ONE), a joint venture of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. ("K" Line), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd ("MOL"), and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha ("NYK").

The 4th Batch IMA Ratings had their Certificate Graduation Ceremony on April 10th 2018. 50 Deck, Engine and Saloon Ratings Passed out from IMA who will be fully employed onboard Haque & Sons Ltd managed vessels. Silver Medal was given to Deck Rating Mahbubur Rahman , Engine Rating MD. Earfanul Hoque Ahad & Saloon Rating Rahul Dey. Chairman, Managing Director, along with Commandant and Principal of IMA attended the ceremony.

The ceremonial passing out ceremony of the 7th batch of pre-sea cadets on International Maritime Academy was held on 29th March 2018. In line with the tradition of the academy, march past by the passing out cadets in presence of their proud parents and other dignitaries was the show of the occasion.
The occasion started with recitation from the Holy Quran. The smartly turned out cadets in their ceremonial attire had indeed put up a good show. Cadet Towfiq Bin Alam has been awarded the gold medal for his all-round outstanding performance. He has also been performing as the Chief Cadet Captain for the last term. Cadet Joydev Biswas was judged as the best nautical cadet and has been awarded the Silver Medal and Cadet S M Aseer Intisar Boby was awarded the silver medal as the best engineering cadet.
The 7th batch cadets have already been selected by prime foreign principals for their employment and the procedure for obtaining their employment formalities is already on.
The session was rounded off with a festive luncheon where the commemorative cake was cut by the chief guest and representatives from the passing out batch of cadets.

4th Batch of Ratings of IMA commenced their training with 10 Deck trainee ratings; 8 Engine Ratings trainee; 07 Fitter ratings; 07 Cook Ratings and 8 Steward ratings. They are expected to finish their course by end January 2018.

Executive Directors of Haque & Sons Ltd graced the occasion. IMA 2nd batch 30 ratings are all onboard vessel and presently completing their required sea time.

The erection of the workshop was completed in early 2017 and was inaugurated on 22nd of February by the honorable shipping minister Shajahan Khan MP and Watanabe San Managing Director of MOL Chemical Tanker Pte Ltd. The same day when seventh batch cadets passed out. Many dignitaries, national and foreign, graced the inauguration ceremony. The new IMA workshop is over 10,000 square feet two storied building having latest equipment and machineries.

Ms. Meher Afroze Chumki, hon’ble State Minister for Ministry of Women and Children Affairs as special guest and Mr. Ashok Madhob Roy, Secretary, Ministry of Shipping and Commodore Syed Ariful Islam (TAS), ndc, psc, BN, Director General of Shipping attended as guest of honor. Eight Foreign guests representing owners/ship Managers were also present.

IMA 6th Batch Cadets debate competition was held in IMA Auditorium. Topic was " TECHNOLOGY IS MAKING OUR LIFE COMFORTABLE AS THE WORLD IS MOVING AHEAD" Two teams debated issues of how technology makes life easier, efficient & faster while opposition team discussed using technology and social media for organizing political movements, cyber bullying, to harm or embarrass people’s privacy etc. The debate was thoughtful, enthusiastic and well prepared.
